How Lighting Design Works

We understand that light defines the spaces we live, learn, work, and get well in. It is not just what you see, but how it makes you feel. Light has the power to invigorate, and yet at the same time to calm.

Our studio’s ethos is about helping to create beautiful spaces for people to enjoy. It is an appreciation that beautiful aesthetics, luxurious finishes and technology that is easy to use belong together.

It’s also a deep understanding that how we consume light, has an impact on our ecology and to our environment. Sustainability we believe starts with an awareness that with new LED technology, lights will inevitably be with us for longer, and therefore the total life cost of lighting, and the value of good lighting needs to be fully understood.

That’s why we carefully consider every design, every light fitting, and every lighting control system to make sure it meets the needs of the project.

We help to demystify the complicated tech speak’ and translate it into a clear language of light that is simple, and yields projects of extraordinary quality.

Our Lighting Design Process

We start by studying your plans, discussing the scope of our involvement, and preparing a feel proposal. We will then meet with members of the team, such as architects, interior and landscape designers, to obtain a brief that outlines the design direction, or what we call ‘the three A’s’ - Activity, what is happening in the space - Architecture, feature elements, finishes and furniture - Atmosphere, lighting control, and creating layers of light.

We will then work on the concept lighting design, to generate ideas and formulate the overall direction of travel. The deliverable is a design booklet to generate feedback.

Once the concept document has been reviewed, and feedback incorporated, we will start the detailed light design stage. This will include a full specification, luminaire schedule, lighting controls schematics and a lighting plan showing the exact location of where the fittings are to be installed. This will also include a detailed costing breakdown.

At this point, there may also be a liaison with the electrical contractor to help the team with any questions they might have to carry out the work on-site.

Once we have the lighting design signed off, we can also help with the order management and delivery, and any on-site technical questions or revisions that may arise. Commissioning the lighting design is important to ensure the lights are correctly aimed and controlled in the right way.
